EU Diplomacy Week: Green growth and green trade - opportunities for Australia
The landmark Paris Agreement signed last year provides a critical turning point to engage the global community to address climate change and embrace the opportunity for a net zero emissions future. Sustainable economic growth requires countries to shift their production to "green products" that will drastically reduce environmental damage. Seizing on the rapidly growing global environmental product industry, countries are building green export markets that allow companies to capture a new segment of the economy while connecting it to address environmental pressures. Oxford economist Dr. Alex Teytelboym and Penny Mealy are compiling a unique dataset on green exports, jobs, skills and patents and using tools from network theory to cluster exports and understand what countries are best poised for green growth in the future. Alex will discuss how Australia can empower its energy industry to create and launch innovative green technologies for export to foreign markets.

Alex is an economist who is interested in market design as well as social and economic networks. He looks at how best to run complex auctions and how networks shape the diffusion of innovations. Moreover, he works on climate change policy. Before coming to INET, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Laboratory for Information and Decision System at M.I.T. and a Visiting Business Fellow at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He received a B.Sc. in Economics (2008) from the L.S.E. and M.Phil. (2010) and D.Phil. in Economics (2013) from the University of Oxford.
